Vertigo – (BPPV)

The most common type of Vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This type of vertigo is caused by small crystals that become displaced in the inner ear. Symptoms can be mild to severe.

Symptoms may include

  • Dizziness or a spinning sensation
  • Falling or feeling as if you are going to fall
  • Lightheadedness, faintness, or a floating sensation
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unsteady walking
  • Mild confusion or disorientation

Evaluation performed

Prior to initiating treatment, your therapist will take a complete history. We will perform tests that can help to identify if you have BPPV. These tests will also help to identify which part of the inner ear is most affected.

Treatment Options

Specific exercises and maneuvers will be performed to move the crystals out of the affected area of the inner ear. You will be given a home program and instructed in activity modification to help improve your symptoms. Maintaining your safety to avoid falls will also be discussed.
